Thanksgiving Kitchen Timeline: What to Finish in September in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg & Delaware

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26.

That date is closer than it feels. If the kitchen is going to carry a full holiday — extra pans, extra people, an island used as a buffet — the countertops have to be in place before the first grocery run, not the night before.

September is not “a nice month for a remodel.” It is the last month that still leaves a clean path to a finished kitchen in October.

This is the timeline Troy Granite uses with homeowners in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg / Camp Hill, and Delaware.

If you only need the “why September” argument, read 5 Big Advantages of a Kitchen Remodel in September. This page is the calendar.

Work backward from November 26

A typical Troy Granite job — measure, select the slab, fabricate, install — runs about 10–14 business days once the stone is chosen. That is the shop clock, not the decision clock.

Most delays are not fabrication. They are:

  • two people who have not agreed on the slab
  • a sink or faucet that has not arrived
  • cabinets that are not fully set
  • waiting until mid-October, when holiday jobs stack up

Use this working calendar.

Date What should already be done
Now – Sept. 12 Visit the showroom. Shortlist 2–3 slabs. Confirm sink, faucet, and cooktop cutouts. Book measurement.
Sept. 13 – Sept. 20 Approve the quote. Lock the stone. Pay the deposit so fabrication can start.
Sept. 21 – Oct. 10 Fabrication and edge work. Old top scheduled for removal.
By mid-October Installation. Seams set. Kitchen usable again.
Late October – early November First real cooking on the new surface. Any small punch-list items closed.
Nov. 26 Thanksgiving. The island is a serving line, not a job site.

Start in the second half of September and you can still make Thanksgiving. Start in late October and you are competing with every other household that had the same idea.

What “finished by Thanksgiving” actually means

A kitchen can look done and still fail a holiday weekend.

Before you cook on the new top:

  1. The old countertop is out and disposed of.
  2. The new granite or quartz is installed, supported, and sealed if the stone requires it.
  3. The sink and faucet are set and leak-checked.
  4. You have cooked on it at least once — not on November 25.

That last point matters. First-time granite owners often wait to learn the daily care. Quartz owners need to remember heat rules. Neither lesson belongs on Thanksgiving morning.

For the step-by-step clock, see How Long Does Kitchen Countertop Installation Take?.

September decisions that protect the holiday

1. Pick the stone for cooking, not for a photo

Thanksgiving is heat, oil, wine, and a lot of hands on one island.

  • Granite handles hot pans better. If the holiday kitchen means roasting pans coming straight off the stove, that matters.
  • Quartz stays consistent in color and asks for less sealing. It is often the better choice when the island is a serving station and you want easy wipe-downs between guests.

Side-by-side detail lives here: Granite or Quartz: Which Is More Durable in the Kitchen?.

Do not pick a slab under showroom spotlights only. Pittsburgh light in November is gray. Delaware beach houses get a different kind of glare. Look at the shortlist in the kind of light your kitchen actually has.

2. Finish the sink and faucet decision this month

The shop cannot cut what you have not specified. A farmhouse sink, a new faucet hole, or an undermount change will stall fabrication faster than the stone itself.

If the sink is on backorder, keep the existing sink and change only the top — or order the sink this week.

3. Do not rebuild the whole kitchen unless the boxes are already in

Countertops sit on finished cabinets. If the boxes are still being chosen, Thanksgiving 2026 is the wrong deadline for a full gut. Replace the tops on the cabinets you have, then plan doors, backsplash, or flooring for January.

If the house is going on the market instead of hosting dinner, the shorter project is still the one that shows: Upgrade Your Kitchen Countertops Before Selling Your Home.

Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Delaware: same month, different kitchens

Pittsburgh

Steelers Sundays start now. By November the kitchen is already in game-day use, then Thanksgiving lands on top of that.

Ross Township / North Hills homeowners usually need an island that can take trays, not just look quiet in a listing photo. Warm stones that hold up under overcast light tend to win here — the same logic as our Pittsburgh color guide.

Harrisburg / Camp Hill

Holiday traffic in this market is family coming in from across the midstate. The kitchen that fails is the small galley that never got a usable landing space next to the oven.

If the layout cannot change before November, a new top and a cleaner edge profile still change how the room works. Measurement in September is what makes an October install realistic.

Delaware

Labor Day weekend is over. Beach rentals slow down. That is when Rehoboth, Lewes, Newark, and Wilmington owners finally use the house as a house.

Coastal humidity and guest traffic still decide granite vs quartz. If the property is a shore house, read the local piece on granite and quartz for Rehoboth, Lewes, and Bethany. For the Delaware scheduling argument, see Why September Is the Best Time to Install Granite Countertops in Delaware.

What the kitchen has to survive on November 26

Write the menu first. Then look at the counters.

  • Roasting pans and baking sheets need a heat-safe landing zone.
  • The island becomes plating, desserts, and drinks. Seams and overhangs get leaned on.
  • Red wine, cranberry, and gravy are the stain test — not a showroom water droplet.
  • Guests set glasses on the edge. A weak build shows up there.

If you host every year and the current laminate or tired tile already chips or stains in October, it will not suddenly behave in November.

A realistic September shopping list

Bring this to the showroom:

  • Approximate kitchen measurements or a phone photo of each run
  • Sink model, or a note that the current sink stays
  • Whether the dishwasher and stove are sliding out or staying put
  • One photo of the cabinets and floor (color matching is faster with both in hand)
  • The date you need the kitchen working again — “before Thanksgiving” is a date: November 26, 2026

Ask for the current package that fits the square footage. Delaware and Pennsylvania specials change; the quote should say what is included (templating, edge, cutouts, old-top removal, install). Do not compare a material-only number to an installed number. That gap is the whole point of The Granite Wasn’t Expensive. The Person Quoting You Was.

FAQ

Can a kitchen started in mid-September still be ready for Thanksgiving?
Yes, if the slab and sink are locked this month and the cabinets are already in place. Mid-October starts are the ones that slip.

Do I need to stay out of the kitchen for two weeks?
No. Most disruption is measurement day and install day. Fabrication happens in the shop.

Is granite or quartz better for Thanksgiving cooking?
Granite if hot cookware is going to hit the surface. Quartz if you want easier day-to-day cleaning and a uniform look. Either works if you install it in time.

Should I wait for a January sale?
You can. You will cook Thanksgiving on the old counters. That is the trade.

Book the September measurement

The holiday kitchen is not designed on November 20. It is scheduled in September.

Call the showroom closest to the house and ask for a Thanksgiving-week install window. Bring the sink decision with you.
